Japanese Scarecrows

Yes, there are crows in Japan. Lots of them. Sometimes they wake me up in the morning walking around on the apartment's tin roof. The first time I heard this I thought it was someone walking around in the downstairs of my apartment. A little freaky. Anyway, with crows come scarecrows, and below you can see the Japanese variety, complete with the typical clothes of the old ladies who work out in the rice paddies.

Not to be confused with the far scarier western style scarecrows, as demonstrated in the hit new movie, Batman Begins:

I imagine the crows get a good laugh out of the oba-chan scarecrows, considering that real 80 year old hunched-over oba-chans pose no threat to them in the first place. I find them really scary but for totally different reasons.

Why do they have scarecrows? I mean, surely the rice is submerged? Is it just a big game of "my scarecrow's better than yours"?

I WANT THE TRUTH.

As an aside, I detest the crows. I once went to the beach, and they pecked a hole in my ketchup bottle, rendering it and all of its contents defunct. Also, they look more evil here then they do back in England, perhaps due to their unique beaks.

I also detest the crows. The other day we were having a picnic, and one flew in and pecked away at all of our yakiniku, ruining it before we could even grill it. I tried to catch the crow so we could grill that instead, but the bastard could fly.

I don't know the answers to your questions charlie.

Obviously, we must do something about these birds. But what?
