update
For those who don't know, I will be coming to Charlotte on December 17th and leaving on January 7th. So get ready for some good times.
Life in Japan is going well. For the first time this season I woke up to find my car covered in ice. The serious snow has not hit yet, but I can't wait til it does so that I can drive down to Hakkoda and hit the powder. The debate this year is whether I should go for skiing or snowboarding. I'm leaning toward trying something new (boarding).
Last weekend I went to a JET seminar. Some of it was helpful, some boring, but the highlight of the two days was a charity talent show / slave auction orchestrated by my friend Alex. The slave auction was a brilliant idea, despite the negative connotations of its name. People go on stage and have other people bid money for that person to be their slave for one day. Combine this concept with the zany personalities of the Aomori JET community and the ridiculous amounts of alcohol consumed that night, and the result was 150,000 yen (roughly $1,400-$1,500) raised to go to a school in Nepal. Well done, people.
The talent show aspect was also quite entertaining, with performances showcasing acting, piano, guitar and drum playing, singing, animal noises, belly dancing, and my own thrilling recitation of "Green Eggs and Ham." I'll be straight here - I stole the idea from Jesse Jackson, who did the same thing on Saturday Night Live years ago. The fun, though, was in the suprise. The audience was drunk and loud, and didn't see "Green Eggs and Ham" coming. They became as big a part of the act as I was, screaming out all sorts of filth to express how much they also did not want to eat green eggs and ham. I can't blame them. It was good times.
Next weekend: Karate test. Wish me luck, and here's hoping I get over this cold before then.
That's all for now.
